Is the world getting crazier or is the coverage just much better?

As we watch the news it seems that things are getting worse and worse. ?But are they really? ? I was reading the story today about the truck that killed 241 US Soldiers during the Beirut bombing attack in 1983. ?There have always been terrible things going on in the world. ?There have always been serial killers and suicide bombers. ?People kill abortion clinic doctors, abduct and kill children, kill their family members, bomb foreign countries….etc. ?It seems it is part of the human condition that people are violent with one another. ?What is new is the constant 24 hour barrage of media covering the violence. ?Yesterday on NPR “On The Media” was dropped for hour long coverage of the shooting of police officers in Baton Rouge. ? This is purely a publicity game designed to increase the ratings of the radio/tv/Internet media presenting the story. ?Do you need to hear all the gory details? ?Do you need to be told over and over again the same story?

While the media reports on the evident effect of “copy cat crimes” they don’t accept the responsibility for the phenomenon. ? Someone thinking about being violent might certainly be goaded into action by hearing the story over and over again. ? ? Does it do us any good to hear about the tragedies all over the world that we cannot do anything to change? ?If there are causes you would like to wrap your life around, by all means do so like feeding starving children, housing the homeless etc.

I have started turning it off. ? We get to choose whats in our heads and hearts. ?While I can’t deny that these things happen in the world, ?I don’t have spend my time wallowing in it. ?I can make an effort to find the good things that happen in the world as well and there are good things; ?acts of kindness, technological breakthroughs, works of art and expressions of joy. ? We can seek these out and make them a part of our daily lives. ?Turn off the news. ? Everyday is a blank slate for you.

Its getting springy around here and that ain’t right.

The lack of winter around these parts has been strange and troubling both from an environmental perspective and from a economic perspective.  Weather experts say that this was the warmest winter on record nationally which may be attributed to climate change.  It is hoped that warmer winters are not becoming the norm as snow and the tourism industries based on it bring in hundreds of millions of dollars to the state each year.  In addition to the snow the maple industry is estimated to bring in 300 million  per year and the cycle of cold nights and mildly warmer days is necessary for the stuff to flow.   We just came through a stretch of 50s during the day and not quite freezing at night.  The maple producers I have talked to say this is not good maple producing weather.

Have we come to far?  Is it too late to begin to maybe turn back the effects of climate change or maybe stop it where it is?   The consensus seems to be that we need to do all we can to slow it down, but that the bucket has tipped already.

Bernie full of surprises

(disclosure…..I am a big Bernie supporter).

The last round of elections won Bernie Sanders two more states as he beat Hillary in both Nebraska and Kansas.  Hillary won Louisiana.  Even though Hillary maintains the delegate lead one has to wonder if her free ride is over.  She has won in primarily Republican strongholds.  As we move to states where Democrats hold the advantage will we see more and more Bernie wins?  Enough delegates remain that Bernie can still win.  California, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Colorado and others could push Bernie onto the nomination.   Bernie’s grass roots support has more and more people railing against Hillary and as momentum for Bernie grows, Hillary becomes more vulnerable.  Remember Hillary was ahead at this point against Obama in 2008.

Green Mountains becoming greener

Both Vermont’s Senate Finance Committee and The Vermont State Senate have approved the legalization of marijuana.  The bill now goes to the Vermont House.  If it passes that hurdle it will be forwarded on to Gov. Peter Shumlin’s desk.  He has voiced his support for legalization many times but the prize is not won yet.   The House is where the bill is meeting the most opposition.   Speaker of the House Shap Smith said moving the bill through the House “will take work” and he has voiced concern about the legalization of marijuana.   As it moves through the process we should expect that there will be amendments that will put licensing and restrictions on growers.

Even though the large majority of information was incorrect and fabricated the propaganda used over the last 70 years to deter marijuana cultivation has become a core belief for many.  Even though there countless studies now available which show marijuana to be more blessing than curse, its hard for people to change core beliefs.  Hopefully our leaders will be able to step outside of their assumptions and beliefs and make decisions based on fact.   In addition to the monetary benefits, marijuana legalization would make pain relief available to many who now depend on the addictive and destructive prescriptions that are widely prescribed.  The other benefit is that people will not be locked up for something that is clearly not a crime.

Trump is popular? Am I on crazy pills?

I cannot begin to express how confused, frustrated and downright terrified the state of Republican primary has me.  That so many people would blindly support this man is deeply troubling.  He is openly prejudice and hateful and people seem to be flocking to him.  I am shocked to discover that there are so many people who share his feelings and have been hiding it.  He has given them permission to express their dark feelings in public and they are becoming more and more aggressive and vocal.  It is my hope that masses of people will stand up and make sure he is defeated, but with the state of his supporters I worry that violence will erupt.  His supporters are clearly not thinking, rational or compassionate people.   Lets hope for the best as we work to put someone sane in the office.

Legalization of The Green in the Green Mountain State

Marijuana advocates are hopeful about the future of legalization in Vermont.  After the decriminalization of marijuana, Vermont is now exploring the possibility of legalizing and taxing marijuana.  The Rand Corp will be conducting a study to take a comprehensive look at the impacts of legalization, both the fiscal impacts and the affects it might have on Vermont culture.
